Hollywood Death Scenes
Published in Paperback by Olmstead Press (September, 2001)
Author: Corey Mitchell
Average review score:

Nice pictures, but nothing new here...
I'm an old-time Hollywood death hag, so the stories in the book were interesting to me. The photos are excellent and the writing is nice, but unfortunately, other than some obscure L.A. area family murders, the celebrity death stories have all been done, and in an address format too. And "Hollywood Death Scenes" is a little too close to "Hollywood Death and Scandal Sites," which came out a year before this one. Surprising that the earlier book wasn't credited in the bibliography here.

Fabulous book
Hollywood Death Scenes is a fabulous book! It is very well researched. Anyone would be able to find people and places that interest them in this book. The "extras" at the end (graveyard information, Coroner's Gift Shop, etc.)were fascinating. The photographs were great. Corey Mitchell has an "easy to read" writing style. It is as if you are talking to him. I highly recommend this book.

Hollywood Death Scenes
Couldn't put down this thrilling and comprehensive account of mass murders and much more. Well researched book that kept me intrigued and amazed at such utter barbaric and senseless acts committed in the luxurious Land of Hollywood (to the pretty, gifted and fortunate people).

The Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery

Authors: Jack Lewis and Jack Mitchell
Average review score:

Satisfied Texas Reader
Taylor has devoted his professional life to the study of tactical firearms employment, and his no nonsense approach comes through clearly in this excellent primer. This author has been a special forces soldier, SWAT police officer, and professional firearms trainer for over 3 decades, and he does a fine job of distilling down what works. His description of calibers, weapon options, and general tactics is probably the best in print. He gives exceptional detail backing up his recommendation of semiautomics in .40 and .45 caliber as the best overall choices. The only thing that kept me from giving him the full five stars was the limited detail on dealing with stress, the "shoot" or "don't shoot" decision, and the legal aftermath. As a person who unfortunately did have to repel a home invasion and murder attempt, I found that the advice I gleaned from Massad Ayoob's book "In the Gravest Extreme" on the justication for deadly force was extremely valuable. Add in the valuable "combat mindset" information in Jeff Cooper's "Principles of Personal Defense", and you will have a basic library that pretty much covers the key issues.

Excellent Primer on Combat Handgunnery
A very good primer for handgun users. The book is full of firearm skills to practice and relevant tatcics for self defense use with a handgun. Mr. Taylor writes with authority regarding the technical operation and discharge of a handgun. There are good training tips and advice given to the novice as well as the advanced handgunner. I did find too much emphasis placed on the Weaver Stance. Taylor neglects to discuss "point shooting" techniques for that spontaneous lethal threat encounter, which is most likely to attack a armed individual. Granted if one knew of an impending lethal threat they would have their handgun drawn and held in a perfect two hand grip with a balanced stance facing the oncoming attack ready to fire. But, in the real world of predators who attack by surpise and without notice one must be able to respond immediately without hesitancy and discharge their weapon while attempting to evade the oncoming attack. This leaves no time for the optimum stance or grip on the handgun. Point shooting is the scientifically proven response to the spontaneous threat. Under the extreme stress of a spontaneous life threatening encounter the body reacts in a manner that is not suitable for responding in the two hand grip weaver stance. Individuals who carry a handgun for protection need to read and train in the technique of point shooting, along with the techniques Taylor write about.

The Definitive Handgun Book
See my review of the original Hangun Combat book. This is the refined and updated version. The best you will find, and everyone will find a good deal of knowledge from this book. Taylor is one the best instructors in the world, and if you cant get to his school, than get the book, and if you can or have been to his school, get the book!

Joy in Mudville : A Little League Memoir
Published in Paperback by Washington Square Press (June, 2002)
Author: Greg Mitchell
Average review score:

Hits one out of the park
For anyone who has played little league, watched little league or can spell little league, this book will entertain and inform. Mitchell weaves a sweet tale mixing a year in the life of his son's pint-sized team with little league history and other baseball tid bits ranging from Bruce Springsteen's perspective on coaching to life as a 60's radical. But the majority is on his lovable A's as they battle their way to the playoffs and encounter angry coaches, overbearing parents, and an alien mascot along the way. It's all Apple Pie and mom's cookies, but it works. Batter up!

Bound for Cooperstown....
Joy In Mudville deserves a place of honor in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mitchell pulls off quite an impressive feat: the strange-but-true story of his son's Little League team is interwoven with intelligent and hilarious riffs on just about every possible human relationship: fathers and sons, husbands and wives, adults who behave like children, interacting with children with the wit and wisdom of adults. Hey, even the real Boss--Springsteen, not Steinbrenner--makes a cameo appearance in the book...Who knew Bruce was born to run the bases? It's a guaranteed homerun for parents, for kids...and Mitchell even manages to win over the naysayers who insist watching baseball is like watching paint dry.

It's Funny Because It's True
Greg Mitchell's "Joy In Mudville" is a fantastic book. I think that anyone who picks it up will quickly become engaged in this John Feinsteinesque memoir about a season spent by a father coaching his son's little league team. But for anyone who has ever been involved with any type of city-league baseball, this book is a must because throughout the whole book, you will be laughing about how close to home it hits. This is true for coaches/parents of little leaguers, former players (like myself), and parents (the spectating variety) of the players. With each person that Mitchell desribed, I found myself realizing that there was the exact same person in one of the leagues in which I had played over the years. I am still trying to figure out if that is comforting or worrisome. Actually, if all parents were like Mr. Mitchell, little league would be a better environment for enjoyment, learning, and competition. (I guess there would also be many more great books in stores to read). Anyway, I guess that if parents and coaches were all normal, supportive, and appropriate, this book would not be nearly as enjoyable. So, read the other reviews if you want more details about the book. But trust me, if you have ever been involved in any way in little league baseball, pick up this book. Like me, you'll find yourself doing atypical things like writing glowing reviews and sending congratulatory e-mails to the author. It's that good.

Signs of Psychic and Spiritual Ability
Published in Paperback by Modern Astrology Publishing (12 November, 2001)
Author: Mitchell E., MD Gibson

Correlations between astrology & paranormal talent & more
Signs Of Psychic And Spiritual Ability by practicing psychiatrist Mitchell E. Gibson (Director of Education and Research, Astrological Institute of Scottsdale) is the second in the Sign Series of books and steeped in the modern contemporary astrological research. Individual chapters address the definition and biology of psychic and spiritual phenomena, astrological signs that indicate psychic ability, and correlations between astrology and paranormal talent, and much more. Dr. Gibson's Signs Of Psychic And Spiritual is a truly fascinating and informative presentation. Also highly recommended is Dr. Gibson's earlier work, Signs Of Mental Illness: An Astrological And Psychiatric Breakthrough (Llewellyn, 1567183026 ...).

Exceptional Software!! I love this product!!
I have been reading books about astrology for years and to date
I have not found a great deal written about spiritual potential and the aspects. And voila!! Dr. Gibson has written what I consider to be a true classic in this field. The way that he synthesizes his personal experiences about life and the world from his psychiatry practice with his software is insightful, visionary, and in short, brilliant. His website intrigued me when he added the tour of the Spiritual Sky software. That showed me everything that the software was capable of. I truly hope that he will continue to produce products that address the gap between the metaphysical and astrology!!!

I called him and asked if he were going to produce a relationship package. Just as luck would have it, he is in the process of creating a program called the Intimate Sky. I love the way the programs allow you some flexibility in relearning the art of astrology. I also like his new vision of the sky as a living breathing being!!

Extraordinary
Dr. Gibson has out done himself again. This book shows Dr. Gibson's kind, caring, generous and loving soul. I have read many books about astrology, Dr. Gibson has done extensive studies, and has worded his entire book, so everyone can understand, even a child, as my daughter has read this book as well. She loved it, in fact, her exact words were . " Mom, this book is amazing." I have recommended this book to all of my colleagues, as well as friends and family. I recommend all of Dr. Gibson's work to everyone, including his software, entitled , " The Spiritual Sky," and "The Inner Sky." Dr. Gibson also has a series of meditation CD's that are exquisite.

A Special Delivery: Mother-Daughter Letters From Afar
Published in Paperback by EquiLibrium Press (01 September, 1999)
Authors: Joyce Stayton Mitchell, Elizabeth Dix Mitchell, and Joyce Slayton Mitchell
Average review score:

A universal experience
"A Special Delivery" by Elizabeth and Joyce Mitchell is a mother-daughter and prenatal memoir in a unique format. I was struck repeatedly at how different this mother and daughter were (geographically and culturally) from my own experience. The letters from the mother, however, felt like ones I have received many times from my own mother. That is because this book shares the spiritual side of parenting that is apparent especially to women. Very enjoyable read.

BabyLounge.com gives A Special Delivery 4 pacifiers (of 5)
This unique book is a chronicle of letters between a mother and daughter living worlds apart, but manage to stay connected with letters full of love, hope, and the anticipation that comes with pregnancy.

Mothers and daughters across the world will relate to this book and give them a new appreciation for the incredible bond that is shared between them. The bond that is magically multiplied exponentially when a grandchild is on the way.

This wonderfully touching book will make you realize that no matter how far apart you are from loved ones, you can always be close at heart.

Are you a mother or daughter...then you will enjoy this book
I have just finished reading the most delightful book. Its a book written by a mother and daughter. The book is "A SPECIAL DELIVERY" by Joyce Slayton Mitchell and Elizabeth Dix Mitchell. Each of them are from a different era so they have to accept each others feelings on life. The whole books is letters back and forth to each other. But I can tell you this I could hardly wait to turn the page and see what the other one would respond back with and its wonderful how over the time each began to accept what the other one was saying or doing. Take time and read this book. It will help you develop your thoughts with your Mom or daughter and give you ways to begin having a better relationship.

Country of My Skull: Guilt, Sorrow, and the Limits of Forgiveness in the New South Africa
Published in Paperback by Times Books (08 August, 2000)
Authors: Antjie Krog and Luke Mitchell
Average review score:

The Author's Story Interwoven with that of South Africa
This book is about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa. Krog does not just tell the story of the Commission, but she tells her story of her reaction to the Commission. In this way, the book becomes her story just as it is many other people's stories. I found the Introduction written by Charlayne Hunter-Gault to be informative and interesting. I read this book because I wanted to see different perspectives on South Africa. I did not always agree with Krog's worldviews, but in spite of this, I found the book informative.

A powerful account of the TRC by an Afrikaner poet/writer.
I purchased this book in South Africa in March, 1998. I lived in Cape Town in 1984 and 1985 and was surrounded by the emerging events that ultimately led to the demise of Apartheid. This book is powerful since it is written by an Afrikaner author who not only relates the horrors presented before the Truth & Reconciliation Commission but also shares her own struggle to reconcile herself with the legacy of her country. This will be a challenge for the reader without first hand knowledge of Aparthied South Africa. Anyone who wants to struggle to understand such a place must read this book.

Unsettling stories from the apartheid amnesty hearings.
I bought my copy of "The Country of My Skull" while on a trip to South AFrica in August, 1998. This is the first-hand observers view of the South African apartheid amnesty hearing in front of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

This is a gripping and unsettling book. Hard to read because of the intensity of the tales that are retold by the author. But this is an important book because we learn again the extent of man's inhumanity to man.

If you are interested in South Africa, politics, racial relationships, or human struggle against injustice, this is a "must read" book. Nothing like it has ever been published.

In an easy to follow format, the book provides understandable solutions that can be achieved in only six weeks. This books helps the person that can resist everything but temptation. I hope I have tempted you to read it. The book is a definite guide to a better YOU! Try it; what have you got to lose? This book can help you lose it and achieve increased energy levels while improving your daily eating habits. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve their quality of life!

WHAT EVERY HARRIED & STRESSED PERSON HAS BEEN WAITING FOR!
If you feel like me--tired, stressed, harried--and react by eating sweets or chips, you have to get I'd Kill for a Cookie. Drs. Mitchell and Christie outdid themselves with this easy-to-read handbook; they certainly must have known how I react to stress--one cookie at a time until the WHOLE bag is gone. The EAT Plan they teach is not difficult to implement in one's daily lifestyle, and the good news is that it really works. I've already lost the nine pounds gained from the pressures of exams this year, and it was not painful. Following the EAT Plan, I still enjoyed a small bowl of my favorite Edie's Rocky Road Light Ice Cream each night! Yet more important that that, I have learned to monitor my commitments so that I don't take on more than I can handle. Not only does the EAT Plan work, but the lists of ways to break the stress-eating habit can help anyone who is indulging in the wrong way. If life's interruptions make you crave food, read this book! It will change the way you react to stress forever. This is a must-read! When is the next book coming out?!

Easy-to-read, easy-to apply diet for life!
I'd Kill For A Cookie is a great book that deals with the everyday nuiances that cause us to eat incorrectly. It applies to people in all walks of life, from professionals, to families, to kids. I changed from the pancakes and syrup I was giving my kids to a protein packed breakfast so they would have more energy and concentration. I also quit eating so much protein late at night because that was the reason I was having trouble sleeping, and now I eat something with more carbohydrates in the evenings. This books shows how we can still eat all the foods we love, we may just have to eat them in moderation or eat them at a different time. When we are stressed, and we all are at some time or another whether we realize it or not, we tend to eat what is the easiest to grab, which is usually the wrong thing! Then we end up feeling worse and eat something else that is bad. This book shows how to manage our stress through proper nutrition. Once we begin to eat this stress-reducing way, we will be amazed, as I was--and still am--at how good we can really feel. This is truly not a diet, per say, but a way of eating for optimal mental health and physical health for your entire life. I am so glad I found this book! I think any person that reads I'd Kill For A Cookie would find it beneficial.

The New Ebony Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Johnson Pub Co (December, 1999)
Authors: Charlotte Lyons and James Mitchell
Average review score:

No thanks
No thank you, I won't be having seconds. I already own the original Ebony cookbook so I picked this one up with high expectations. What a let down! The New Ebony cookbook is full of bland recipes that I will never try. Considering that the orignal book is a treasury of Americas finest Black cooking there is no excuse for this new version to be so poor. Stick with the original.

Okay, but a real disappointment
This book was a huge disappointment. I have Frieda Knight's wonderful _Dinner with a Dish_ (from Ebony), so really looked forward to this one. But it was so coldly written, with no introductions, anecdotes, or descriptions of the recipes. In the aforementioned _Dinner with a Dish_, it tells how a minted pea recipe became very popular after someone mistakenly used mint tea instead of water to cook some peas. I like that sort of intro/description, and missed it here. For example, all recipe collections include some that are quick-and-easy, some that use up ingredients we keep on hand, some that are very cheap, some that are out-of-this-world delicious show-stoppers, some that have sentimental value, etc. -- and it is important to know which are which before wasting your time and effort. (For example, I'm a northerner, and have never seen or tasted collard greens. A recipe describing them as delectable would tempt me to locate and try them -- but, without such a description, I have no way of knowing if the recipe is listed because collard greens are readily available, or because they taste good.) is book doesn't provide any clues about time or effort involved or results expected. I was horribly disappointed, and will be returning it.

However, I gave it three stars rather than one, since the above criteria may not matter to all people.

charlotte knows her stuffings!!!
this cookbook is perfect for cooks like me who really don't know how to cook!!! the language is plain, the ingrediants are simple, and the results.....for me... is usually tasty!!!

the timely tips in the back of the book are especially helpful. they teach me how to make substitutions, when i don't have certain ingrediants the recipes require.

i also found this to be the perfect cookbook for my 14 year old son to learn the basics of functioning in the kitchen.

Spiritual Answers / Today's Questions
Published in Paperback by Writers Press Club (01 December, 2000)
Author: Rev. Elvis F. Mitchell Ph.D.
Average review score:

Reform Call
Rev. Elvis Mitchell review shows the depth of post-modern fundalmentalism in the individual. If Christianity is ever to be resurrected it shows it cannot be done from within institutional structures as many modern day reformers try. They know no other way. Those in exile are calling out to say that there is consistency in the wondrous humane works of Scripture but the mythical and superstitous interpretation that is taught requires sentient minds to blow away the myths of the past, the childish literalisms, the false masks of irreverent pastors and move forward to a real but ancient call to freedom. It was a long road from Egypt to Canaan and most wanted to turn back. Christianity has foresaken those in exile and our Christ is the anointed but antithetical to the Chirst of latter day Christianity. Let our minds and hearts awake to tomorrow. We have learnt from Rev. Mitchell that Christianity is dead. Let the ancient but new spiritualism arise.

Come Out
I was delighted that the Rev. Elvis Mitchell showed clearly the fruits of fundamentalism.."Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them". It somewhat amazed me that the Rev. chose to stay within the confines of such a structure that continually makes out ruthless injustices to whomsoever it pleases. For those claiming Scripture as their soul guide the Hebrew writers warned "Woe to the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture". In New Testament days there were those who "taught for doctrine the commandments of men". But "it is scripture that is profitable for doctrine, for reproof..and instruction in righteousness". "Study to shew thyself approved." Rev Mitchell calls us to take heed to the Revelator who seeing spiritual Jerusalem become a captive to incorporeal Babylon wrote, "Come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues". A very clear message and an easy read.

SPIRITUAL ANSWERS TODAY'S QUESTIONS
WAKE UP AMERICA!! THE NEW VOICE IS HERE, READ, BECOME INFORMED AND SEE THAT NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE IF WE DO NOT ACCEPT WHAT'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. CHANGE IS NEEDED, THIS BOOK WILL SHOW WHERE THE CHANGE IS MOST NEEDED.

Reflections on the Revolution in France (Oxford World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (November, 1999)
Authors: Edmund Burke and L. G. Mitchell
Average review score:

Correction to the one underneath
My recommendation was for the Oxford rather than the Everyman edition, edited by L.G. Mitchell. I apologise for this error.

"The Wild Gas" ... let loose...
I personally find, overall, that other persons writing
about and analyzing Burke and his views tend to be a bit
more interesting and compelling, than Burke himself in
his prose.
I do not consider myself a "conservative" -- in the
sense that that is a political agenda or mindset, nor
a reactionary. There is much in academics and political
philosophy which tends to want to damn by labels -- and
by putting ideas into boxes, filing, and forgetting...rather
than listening to, or thoughtfully considering.
One can believe in classic values, and find his
grounding in classical philosophy without being a
rigid reactionary or even a doctrinaire conservative.
So, when Burke speaks with the speech of the
Ancients and espouses classical warnings and
remonstrances about the necessity of restraint
and careful consideration, one can agree with him.
And, as the editor and author of the "Introduction"
to the Penguin Classics edition, Conor Cruise O'Brien,
points out, there is that of the prophet in Burke as
well, since he published these REFLECTIONS in 1790,
before the Reign of Terror in 1793, yet he correctly
foresees the excesses to which the French Revolution
will proceed in its unchecked course.
One of the best quotes which I like very much from
this work follows:
"When I see the spirit of liberty in action, I see
a strong principle at work; and this, for a while,
is all I can possibly know of it. The wild GAS, the
fixed air is plainly broke loose: but we ought to
suspend our judgment until the first effervescence is
a little subsided, till the liquor is cleared, and
until we see something deeper than the agitation of
a troubled and frothy surface. I must be tolerably
sure, before I venture publicly to congratulate men
upon a blessing, that they have really received one.
Flattery corrupts both the receiver and the giver;
and adulation is not of more service to the people
than to kings. I should therefore suspend my
congratulations on the new liberty of France, until
I was informed how it had been combined with
government; with public force; with the discipline
and obedience of armies; with the collection of an
effective and well-distributed revenue; with morality
and religion; with the solidity of property; with
peace and order: with civil and social MANNERS. All
these (in their way) are good things too; and, without
them, liberty is not a benefit whilst it lasts, and
is not likely to continue long."

Reflections on the Revolution in France: (Penguin Classics)
Reflections on the Revolution in France written by Edmund Burke and Edited with an introduction by Conor Cruise O'Brien the Penguin Classics version is the best version of this unparalleled powerful work. The reason for this is that included in this version you have an introduction that gets the reader upto speed. For Burke is without doubt the foremost conservative British political thinkers of his time, (1729-1797).

There is a biographical note on Edmund Burke right after the introduction giving the reader a historical perspective into who is Edmund Burke and why his advice was sought after with regard to the French Revolution and the consequenses of its following. Unlike the United States, France had an established entrenched government, so any change in form of government meant that an upheavel of property, religion, and traditional French institutions would have to occur. Underlying the French Revolution was the latent Catholic Cause which being Irish Burke had a good deal of sympathy.

Burke's Reflections written in 1790 was a really good prediction of the events pretaining to the Reign of Terror experienced by the French. This edition of Edmund Burke's "Reflection on the Revolution in France" has well explained footnotes further giving the reader a much greater appreciation for the practical wisdom of Burke. Burke was a man who would've rather seen a gradual or piecemeal reform as opposed to a revolution as he was sceptical in his belief in expediency.

Another plus for this edition, in contrast to the others available, is that there is a well appointed "Notes" at the end of Burke's writing. Also, at the very end of this book you'll have a recommended reading list, which for those inclined is indispensable. By far this edition is well worth reading and great care has been given to bring this important work in a form that is easily understandable, with enough detail to make it interesting reading.
